Pokemon is great for learning Japanese, but only as a tool, not as an official source.
Step 1 is to learn Hiragana and Katakana.
Then, play Pokemon. Which is great, because it's Pokemon, so you already know how to play it in your sleep, so you can focus on how the scribbles onscreen sound, in a fun context setting without having to worry too much about meanings, which, in this super early stage, is fantastic. They're great reinforcement tools.
Then, as you learn more about conjugation and grammar and build your volcabulary, you can *still* use the Pokemon games as reinforcement for those things as well
When you start learning Kanji and more complex vocabulary, you're going to want to graduate to something like Dragon Quest, which will still be lower level, but will have more common Kanji. Someone else suggested reading Shounen Jump because of the Furigana, which is also a good suggestion
TL;DR: Pokemon is great as a supplement and probably the best beginner supplement there is, but not a main course
