If, hypothetically you were rich (I know you're poor, this is hypothetical) and ambitious (VERY hypothetical), and wanted to create a monster-catching monster-battling franchise to rival the Pokémon series (HYPOTHETICAL) what are major things you would do that Pokémon itself doesn't?

When designing a product you have do consider who it's for, its niche in the economy. What kind of people play no-name Pokeclones? Not little kids, but weird old turds with too much free time like you and me. Crowdfunded video games especially are for sad old men looking for validation. So we go full-on adult audience here. Nuzlocke rules by default, even more RNG timesinks for tournament players and speedrunners, even more coomer bait, online PVP but no trading, etc.

Let you actually interact with the monsters, not just pet and feed but go full nintendogs with various training minigames that account for the bulk of stat growth and having to actually teach them to do anything they didn't already know when you got them instead of just being a tedious repetitive slog for a 10% stat boost. If it's turn based then make it more strategy based with your whole team vs opponent's whole team, if it's real time then one on one with terrain/environmental stuff like rocks to toss and water to hide in. Basically double down on the gameplay because there's already plenty of other monster breeders that focus on collecting the roster or the story or are just another rpg with monsters instead of anime dudes in the hopes of not getting drowned out by the hundreds of other Final Fantasy clones.

Greater mon interactions
A much more intricate way to customize movepools and/or abilities similar to pic related
Destructible environments
Monsters fighting in the wild like in monster hunter world
Players having distinct classes which determine the type of mons they specialize in training
A battle simulator which makes grinding unnecessary for comp

A colony world would come with it's own mysteries and animals. We keep just enough sci-fi to get the humans there. They kick out the space elves and take over the main cities. It'll make a great starter town while they build New York. Let's call the 'mons Bios just to call them something.
So you've got a horde of young humans ready to go out there and take on everything, and wanting to team up with a bio. You've got the older humans ready and waiting for everything to betray them, up to and including cannibal clouds.
You've also got a red light district that has it's own playable situations. A little bit cyberpunk, a little bit burlesque saloon, some massage parlour. There's always the possibility of a new organ they missed, or other venom bite. Or you can go out to the wilds and go camping, maybe look for ore veins that haven't been found. Fight the elves and have clear dnd small time army goals. Use your bios to capture and sell equipment. Go live with the political outcast caravan and find that their deep dark secret is they sell babies to the government or something. Go find ancient sleeping dragons and use your bios against it's defenses. Hack the gibson and turn the orbital laser against the dragon, but do you kill any of your bios?

since pokemon is so big and it's been going so long, I think I would have to do something different from the ground up.
two ideas:

allow players to make their own monsters (instead of catching them),
NPCs will use monsters that could be made using the same toolkit
completing challenges would make more options available.

It makes designs limited but it would allow the use and equipment of weapons and armor.
