Only The Spell of the Unown can stand alone as an actual decent movie even if you don't know much about pokemon.
Easily the best looking pokemon movie, the artstyle, setting of the story and animation is extremely good.
I think its biggest strength is that it's a movie about a little girl put in a tragic situation given the power to wish for anything. It's relatable and easy to digest. The pokemon are just a tool to tell her story rather than being in the center of the story like pretty much all other pokemon movies.
The ending is also the greatest one of them all.
