Maybe if there was actually meaningful strategy in pokemon, having turns would make sense. There are plenty of ways to do engaging turn-based combat (Mario RPGs for example). Even Pokemon Go has a more interesting battle system than the mainline games

It's not for Pokemon. This series is about magical monsters who all have their own unique characteristics and fighting styles, but in the actual game, most of them function the same.

It's made even worse by the fact that Pokemon has other media that shows what battles are actually like, so the game's turn-based shit is even more disappointing in comparison.

I honestly think it's just because James Turner is the art director and that's how he remembers the logo, so it was fitting as the game is based in where he grew up.
Also might be the case for the Galarian Birds, they're very likely just reject shadow forms of the birds from Gale of Darkness's cancelled sequel.

Then you lose the message of "every Pokemon is a unique individual" entirely, which they would never forsake for the main campaign even if competitive play is full of identical Pokemon.

Basically if it's done right, you get very little gain, meanwhile if it's done wrong, you lost customers in the confusion. As the video game market is already super saturated, the last thing you want to do is risk losing customers.
