>>45907605>>45907625There was this debate years and years ago here over the exact line in Japanese. In short, they used 産む (うむ; umu), which is the literal act of giving birth rather than the metaphorical meaning of the word. Like
>>45907696 says, the implication is that it wasn't genetic tube cloning but rather a highly spliced embryo made from Mew's own DNA placed back within it for live birth. Mechanics such as breeding did not exist at the time, Pokémon's world was not so established.
The older Pokémon gets, the more it retcons its older games. Pokémon Red and Green took place in a fictional world that greatly resembled our own, but had the addition of creatures known as Pocket Monsters. The region itself is called Kanto (カントー), which is not 100% the same name as the real life counterpart (かんとう), but it would be like naming countries Amerika, Kanada, or Meksiko. Not that Game Freak went that far since they literally mention China (中国; ちゅうごく - Chūgoku) and America (アメリカ).
Anyway, Game Freak and TPC have worked hard at scrubbing away whatever real life grit existed in Pokémon. I personally new Pokémon to be very sterile and masturbatory in what it is. Characters only seem to have hobbies related to Pokémon to the point it dominates their entire personality.
