They fix the starters and have different game modes for Unova. However, I'm not sure if you can play the games "basic" with the enhancements.
That is without the other 649 (at the time) dex available. You just don't get that real BW "feel" with the older Pokemon there, but since you can catch the other starters maybe that might interest you.
Otherwise, just box em. Lilligant is a good Snivy replacement, Darumaka is basically an I win button, and... I suppose you could use the Water fossil or Seismitoad. Even Basulin (trade) isn't that bad really.
