If you like competitive, like me, just go to the right thread for it. Here it's mostly casual, and battles were going on before. It's just the sorry state of this general that made things that way, aka dead, but multis, which are battles, are probably the most done activity around now so I wouldn't even say that battles are not "popular enough".
Plus, as you should know, competitive is almost identical to chess, it's a strategy game and, it asks a lot of thinking and training, more than most people are willing to give to be good at it.
