this soulless? I agree that the first Magikarp is superior and looks more lively, but what do you think? Post Pokemon art (official or fanart) that you think is soulful and describe why you think it is soulful.

Sugikarp looks more expressive, he looks happy to be alive. The pose gives him more character, the coloring is better and more "authentic", and the bubbles are a nice touch.

Because it's posed in an exciting way. I think Blastoise is the only Pokemon with modern Sugimori art to be posed in a sort of interesting way. The rest are just so plain.

It looks like a living creature the way it's mid-flop. Modern art typically has them in default poses like some toy awaiting examination and play.

The lighting of that first picture makes you almost feel the scales and sunlight. Nice texture. The other one looks cartoonish and like a perfectly-symmetrical toy.

Modern Magikarp is better because marketingfags can fully understand the design aspects, and the colors are professionally profiled + prepared for equilibrium calibration of contrast/exposure/brightness to work in nearly every monitor

Also the face looks a bit more personable now. Before it looked more like a fish but now it looks more like a fish-human hybrid.

The pose, that's it really. The more dynamic it looks, the better. Old art (and sprites) always had dynamic poses as opposed to the new art (and 3D models) which is just kinda static.

I would like to add that the first is willing to go slightly off model for more dynamic shapes and proportions to make the pose look better. For example the yellow spikes are more “imperfect” for a more natural look, and the tail is a bit longer instead of being a part of a perfect egg shape so it can actually do said pose and look like it’s flopping in the first place
