i boxed in gen 7 and 8 due to how fucking horrendous those two gens starters looked, but i've never played through a game without a starter, even if it's not from that gen

Never, I normally pick the Fire starter and build my team around that core. The absolute dearth of early Fire types actually enforces this style. Gen VII was the only one I didn't pick it and that was because Primarina was the overall better choice. and Salandit/Salazzle was worth waiting to reach.

It depends. I just use what I like, so if I like the starter I keep it and if I like other Pokemon more I focus on them instead.
