It's a shame because the actual Region design did start getting more interesting after 5th Gen. Kalos had this cool radial city plan, with Lumiose at the center of an interconnected Region. It functioned sort of like Saffron did in Gen 1, but you have access to it way early in the game. Imagine, starting in Lumiose and being able to go from there to Laverre, or to Coumarine, etc. But instead, they mucked it up by railroading you with blackouts.
Alola was even worse. Akala Island was is clearly made for you to access the Water/Fire/Grass trials from Heahea City. But Stoutland guy gets in the way of your adventure. The whole game is a cheesy guided tour.
