The only reasonable explaination would be that being a Pokemon trainer isn't taken as serious as it is in the games. As in there are more "actual" jobs that are paid way better than some sport for entertainment. That's why there isn't much competition and Ash is among the medicore trainers.

With a track record like this, he deserves it. I feel at this point, if Ash uses his strongest mons he can hold his own against any trainer. Ash's overall winrate across the entire series is somewhere around 70 percent. Consider that in the real world, even the top 1% of teams and athletes in 1v1 sports have at best a 60-65% winrate

ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING
He was given the champion victory so the writers could actually focus on something other than the same old trek through one region and fighting the same “rivals” over and over
Instead the new region is incorporated, they get to pull plot elements from it, but they change it up with other shit like FUCKING MEWTWO COMING BACK so nothing is off the table

And honestly? I wouldn’t be shocked if Iris IS in the World Championships. Last we saw her, she met with Clair. She probably went around the world meeting Dragon Masters. It could end up with her revealing she’s the new Champion of Unova, to tie into BW2.

Is that actually true? When I was a kid I fenced nationally quite a bit, and just to make it to the top 8 of a national competition you need to have well over a 75% winrate (at least in elims, in theory you can throw pools, but most winrates will look higher than that).
Top level competitors might have at best a 60-65% winrate against other top tier competition, but likely much higher overall. Ash's opponents aren't held to the same standard of quality.

Remember that despite the fact that Ash is still officially 10, each league takes place regularly and implied yearly. So thats a shit ton of still active trainers who regularly have placed in the top 32 or higher like Ash does. Add in all the regions from future games that exist "off-screen" it's entirely feasible for there to be several hundred trainers with similar success rates to Ash. Remember that named Hearten trainer in the Sinnoh finals? There's probably tons of guys like that.

Pokemon centres, marts and gyms would have english letters on them up until gen 3. The unova series in the anime had its own written language. In the games, Pokken tournament, sun/moon, sword/shield, masters and LGPE all have their own unique written alphabets.

He's routinely, even since the beginning, ended up in the top 20 of every single region he's been to. Even the "worst" performance of top 16 you can safely assume those in the 16, the elite four, and the champion are the best in the region, so that's still placing somewhere in the 21 best in every individual region including Kanto. Then in Alola he not only won the league (which I guess I'll admit was a scuffed league), but blew Kukui the fuck out even though in spite of the fact that Kukui used Tapu Koko in that fight. And still, the manbabies that insist that it would be shit writing if he so much as touched an E4's pokemon in a battle, that bizarrely insist they'd better be on their deathbed before Ash beat an elite four, will be seething with raging hatred when based Ash ends up in the top 100 battling E4's and champions and actually winning those fights.

What? They have fucking tournaments that gather all the atention unlike in the games where you just need to gather all the badges, fight the E4 and the the Champion.

If anything, the way that the league is structured in the games make it look even more pathetic than the anime and like a real joke since there's no competition outside of your "rival".

But I believe most international dubs of the anime are based on the American dub, and 4Kids replaced much of the Japanese text. While the anime only rarely has Japanese text nowadays (not counting stuff like the Professor Oak segments), TPCi will often replace that as well.

there's a gap in power skill really can't bridge. They made this pretty clear in Unova when Iris as a kid fought Drayden. She used her Drillbur who was constantly training and fucking up wild Pokemon against his Haxorus who he commanded to stay still and just tank attacks. It took literally 0 damage attack after attack until it just one shot them. That's objectively skilless, but they still won.

But seriously, I'm fascinated by the logistics of the Pokémon world and how many people might have been trainers before deciding to become actually productive members of society. Probably why the episode with the Japanese businessman having a midlife crisis and entering a contest really sticks with me.

Not everyone who watches the anime plays the games and the opposite is true as well. And it's only one tournament, not everyone in the world is competing in it. Making Leon "unbeatable" was kind a bad idea though, since it implies that there's no one out there stronger than him. Him beating defeated would be for the best, since it resets to no region's particular champion being the strongest in the world.
