They’re great because it had the Physical/Special split, more Pokémon, more moves, more features, Mega Evolution, a new post-game story, and such. All things that Emerald, the definitive edition of Hoenn, lacked.
However, they’re also awful because they water down the originals’ content, are even easier than the originals, introduce excessive amounts of handholding some of which even go directly against the region’s own level design, sacrificed content there was in the originals for a poorly written post-game story with the most hated character in the entire franchise, and ended the post-game with a giant middle finger to everyone who were looking forward to the remakes in the first place.
