I... don't understand hate for Meganium.
Cyndaquil is consistently much worse through entire game thanks to ridiculous evolution level and lacking in stats and movepool before that. It's literally running with something that can't kill anything nor can't survive a single hit for 3/4 of Johto. At least Chikorita has some good matchups, bad matchups are mostly manageable and has bulk and support movepool to do something against most opponents but Cyndaquil feel like waste of team slot.

I disagree. Base 100 speed and 109 special attack is great in game, it learns Dig for coverage, and Fire typing beats Pryce, Jasmin, and Bugsy with ease especially with stab Flame Wheel/Flamethower.

You mean more like 80 speed and special attack and lol 60 ATK because that what you'll be having for most of the main game. If you don't overlevel (why you should, it's Johto) it means end of Radio Tower shenanigans, right before final gym.
Cyndaquil's evolution levels fuck it harder than any poison, flying anf bug types can fuck Chikorita because you're stuck with a 405 BST frail crap with shitty coverage. In GSC it even can't learn Thunderpunch till Typhlosion. And dig is garbage move lol.

Chikorita is S+ team support. Reflect is broken ingame and all you need is the Return TM you get in Goldenrod, after that it's a one two punch of putting up Reflect and switching out or just having Meganium facetank everything and use Return + Synthesis.

The average Pokemon player has the IQ of a chimp and can only spam STAB moves for OHKOs but the thinking man enjoys a supportive mon. Don't tell me you're too stupid to do basic team support ingame, anon.

You are wasting time with those strategies, Meganium has base 80s offenses and using Reflect wastes a turn. Good Pokemon can actually KO stuff. If you really want to "outsmart" the computer with Reflect then your options are
>Exeggutor
Hits harder than Meganium and puts foes to sleep
>Noctowl
Can also put foes to sleep and recover hp
>Kadabra
Fast and can recover
>Ledian

Yeah because the shitmons ingame are totally optimized. The literal only super bulky mons you're going to be running into are in the E4.

See my point about spamming STAB moves. If you have ADHD and are literally incapable of sitting still long enough to have a match last an extra turn or two then by all means pick Cyndaquil and use one move the whole game.

It's the same as gen 1 when starters are a difficulty setting. In gen 1 grass is easy, water is normal, and fire is hard. In gen 2 it reverses. Grass is hard, water is still normal, and fire is easy.

As a kid I chose Chikorita because I knew what the final evolution looked like and I loved dinosaurs
It also forced me to play pokémon "correctly" and build an actual team instead of just overleveling my starter.

When HGSS came out I was trying to be a normie and picked Cyndaquil, but now I realized that my intuition as a child was right all along

That's why self-imposed challenges exist. Because Pokemon has a ton of depth to it but is so easy that there's no reason to engage in that depth at all.
