why did gen 5 kill pokemon?

The map design of Kanto is super overrated. You spend so much time going back and forth between Lavender, Celadon and Saffron, and it bizarrely condenses virtually all of the Team Rocket content.

>arrive in Lavender
>immediately have to leave because you can't make any progress in the tower
>pointlessly have to skip over Saffron to go to Celadon first through a tunnel with zero content or pokemon encounters
>fight Team Rocket in Celadon for Silph Scope
>fight Team Rocket again in Pokemon Tower to get the Poke Flute
>fight Team Rocket again in Saffron to open the gym
>return to either Celadon or Lavender to finally move on

Does the first time you fight the E4 really count though? If you want to become the champion and beat Alder you have to fight them again when they have 6 Pokemon.

Replaying it right now.

Most problems arise from it trying to be a new entry point to the series, which ended alienating some people. Also, mon design is terrible in comparison to gen 4, which if it held the same quality, or they even had reserved gen 4 designs for Unova, it would had been more loved.

Another problem is type distribution across the game, there is not many good option to build your team (namely it takes forever to find any Electric-type that isn't Zebristka or ANY water type). Too much gameplay is post-game, which again brings back the annoyance of grinding to E4.

You're emulating already.
The only bad thing about gen 5 are the sub-par legendaries and starters. The progression is linear but the routes aren't, they have a lot of side-areas.
