Sinnoh was Darkrai and Latios asspull through the power of executive cockblocking but Ash came out looking extremely good since the was the first trainer in ALL of Sinnoh to be able to defeat Darkrai and then as the cherry on top of the cake Pikachu tie'ing with Latios. There's also the fact that beforehand the plotline with Paul was concluded in a satisfactory manner so there was a sense of fulfillment even if Ash lost at the league.
Kalos was also a proper fight even if the ending was bullshit thanks to the power of execusive cockblocking and there was nothing on the side like with Sinnoh so it all feel unfulfilling. It was bullshit, but not an embarrassing loss. Alan was a top trainer.
