The nonchalantness with which Pokemon get traded may also imply they're pretty mercenary in nature.
If you consider the anime/Pokemon Yellow canon, then Pokeballs can't even hold Pokemon that don't want to be in one (I don't remember if there was a followmon explanation in the other games).
So considering that
- Pokemon seem to have plenty of options for recourse
- most Pokemon are better fighters than humans
- Pokemon don't care about social repercussions like "industry blacklisting"
I'd say if push comes to shove the power dynamic would actually favor the Pokemon.
