Okay OP, you should just read the smogon dex entry and that sums up why it was great, but I'll give you a quick rundown.
>effectively immune to biggest weakness>can run literally any set and still be one of your team's biggest assets>offensive stealth rocker>defensive tank>setup sweeper>special nuke>arceus check>marshadow check>kyogre checkThe list goes on. It can do literally just about anything except wish/heal bell support. And it is one of the best at what it does usually.
To put it into perspective, max defense groudon can live a +2 EQ from Ekiller, and max spAtk groudon's overheat has a chance to OHKO neutral arceus with max hp on switchin. Its fucking good.
