For me it was right here. I very explicitly remember crossing the bridge at the bottom after beating mars and thinking "This is it, this is the most fun I've ever had". Something about the music, the tone of this section of the game, and the immediate recognition of the fact that this route is actually the one showed off in the intro crossed with my wild imagining of what the rest of the areas I haven't explored yet are gonna look like, and where I was gonna go first, it all clicked and just made it into the absolute peak of the series for me.
In broader terms, I'd say gen 4 was overall where it all peaked for me, I had played gens 2 and 3 before this and Gen 4 felt like the culmination of everything that came before
