because megas are being pushed and marketed in other forms of media outside of the mainline video games which TPC always half-asses despite it being one of their most important projects

We even know that Sun and Moon originally had a conceptually closer connection to XY in the alpha. Even in the finals we still can see evidence of Xerosic being used as inspiration for the Ultra Recon Squad and the PSS being intact for the bottom screen despite SM using a different engine.
Plans change, SM was intentionally gimped in order to compete with the non-threat Yokai Watch which ultimately led to the abandonment of Bank, checkpoint gameplay shift, and removal of gyms in Alola alongside trends of pump-and-dump regional gimmicks instead of one centralized one.
Even now, they can't seem to let the concepts they cut go to waste as it's all their rehashing. Eternatus even has clear inspirations from the whole Infinity Energy schtick that XY highlighted. There's nothing to say they aren't going back to that after realizing people don't really like the idea of gimmicks that are made to die outside of the flavor of the month region.
The reckoning is coming, it's just a matter of whether or not GF pussy out again like they did with SM.
