Also, as a bonus, literally every Pokemon with long, prehensile body parts. The Gen 5 tween animation makes all of them look like utter shit. I'll use Suicune as an example, but the Lake Spirits, Mew, and Mewtwo suffer the same way

Yeah, it was funny how the games regressed by letting me actually customize my trainer, pet and feed my Pokemon, and showing the Pokemon having unique attack and fainting animations. I think games should regress more often.

sizing body parts up for emphasis is a pretty standard part technique in animation it really isn't anything unique to gen 5. I think it looks a bit wacky in the mankey example but it still does the job of showing the heavy breathing well

That's not what I meant. I know of that technique, and there is definitely a way to do it well (one of Grapploct's attack animations comes to mind), but there it just looks awkward because not only do you visibly see the sprites break and stretch, making it look cheap, but it's limbs don't follow the expansion in a believable way at all, least of all the tail.

It really shows that the people who praise BW's spriteworks really have no idea what they're talking about. The Mesprit and Mankey ones look exceptionally awful.

You'd think a Pokemon based off of a martial artists would actually have a decent fighting stance. It's so weird that Lucario, of all the Fighting Pokemon, seems to have been shafted the most in terms of idles reflecting their fighting style

This seems to be the biggie separating what made some of Gen 5's sprites "bad" and what made some of Gen 6+'s models "bad". Gen 5's were the jerky, stiff animations that happened way to quickly and were exaggerated in all the wrong ways. Gen 6's are stiff because they moe too slowly and not enough, making the Pokemon look halfway-asleep. At the very least some of the Pokemon in Gen 6+ have more than JUST the idles to fall back on in terms of animation and conveying personality, which is way more than you can say for the unlucky Gen 5 sprites.

the sprites breaking is just a limitation of the resolution due to the hardware there's really not much you can do about that as a developer, on an actual ds screen you dont really notice it anyways though so its not too big of a deal. Though like i said i do agree that it looks a bit wacky because of what >>45987472 said.

i think a big problem (aside from some being animated too fast like sudowoodo's) is that most of the past pokemon are their sprites from gen 4, which just aren't built for animation like this. most gen 5 and past pokemon which did get new sprites like metang look pretty decent.

guy you responded to here, Yeah, I can agree with that. Like, Liepard's long, curly tail isn't PERFECT, but it animates just fine because it has the appropriate frames of animation to convey proper movement, despite being somewhat stiff. Its pigeonholing do many old sprites into a new medium on top of what was probably the usual dev cycle, meaning they had to be out in a somewhat quick time frame, really just soured the whole concept

Then please tell me what im getting wrong, because im pretty sure that the sprites breaking when transformations are applied to them because they can only be drawn on a small grid of pixels is the correct reasoning.
