There's a reason kids play Fortnite and Minecraft but not Pokemon nowadays. They might love Pikachu to death and watch every episode of the anime that's on Netflix but you must have never interacted with a kid if you think they're going to sit and mash a through hundreds of text boxes and slow battles.
It's BECAUSE the game is for kids that it should change the formula. Kids know how to do rock-paper-scissors, make the first gym based on type advantages with fire-water-grass and make the rest all have themes like weather, trick room, or status spam.
If the game is for kids, the main story should TEACH kids how to play.
