Daily reminder LGPE is closer to a real Pokemon game than anything else in Gen 7 or 8 is and we haven't had a true main series entry since ORAS.
Don't even give a fuck about the cut. They already said it was coming after they removed the NatDex in SM. All I care about is that the games are a glorified ad for Pokemon HOME which does less than Bank at triple the price.

I’m confused, weren’t all Pokémon available in SM entries? How is that a cut of the National dex? Yeah the dex itself wasn’t there, yet all could still be inside it?

Keyword for LGPE is closer. None of the nu-Pokemon games fit these criteria which cements a defining line in the sand where Pokemon died, which also happens to be when they started making gimmicks exclusively for the new and special region that conveniently doesn't work in others because <reasons>.

Why did they remove this. It was a much better way of teaching the player type matchups since it forced them to get creative and play around their opponent instead of just letting your starter take care of it. It helped to establish that your team needed to be able to cover each other's weaknesses.

The same reason they removed almost all of those other things in SM, they stopped caring.
USUM also missed the opportunity to shove Gladion in there sooner and with Kukui no longer the champion the other starter just goes unnoticed I guess.

Yes, and SWSH also has optional legendaries.
Neither of them fit any of the other categories.
SM has 7 trials but a redux trial in USUM, and SWSH has 8 gym badges but only 7 gym challenges (6 if you don't even count Piers' just being the entirety of Spikemuth)

But yeah not arguing, Alola doesn't really fit the criteria of the older games and that's evident in how the games play (I saw someone make the comparison of Super Metroid to Metroid Other M)
I don't think that "list" of things is really necessary to determine what is or isn't a Pokemon game, but I do agree that SWSH and SM play out different enough to be considered something else, and that left an impact on me when I tried out LGPE and realized how much had really changed.

They never got rid of it fully.
Kukui had the starter with the type advantage against yours.
Gladion gave his Silvally a Drive with the type advantage against your starter.
Leon has the starter with the type advantage against yours.
It's not as good as your main rival having the type advantage, but it's something.

XY did it the best though, even though Shauna picks the starter weak to yours and that's even the first battle you do in the game, every other battle is with Serena/Calem who have the better starter.

The problem is that in SM and SWSH, the rival you fight the most is the punching bag.
Like >>46001450 put, XY did it best as clobbering Shauna at the beginning gives the player the satisfaction of learning type matchups matter and then the rest of the game doesn't give it to you that easily (because the rest of the game is already insanely easy but I digress)

That is getting rid of it though. The intended functionality of giving your rival the better guy type-wise is to have the plauer cover their starter's weakness. By giving it to Kukui, Leon, and Gladion by the time he gets Silvally, the player already has a team of 6 and it doesn't matter.

How the hell is that a positive? The series was literally the stalest bag of shit before SM at least tried to change things up. The same old tired formula rinsed and repeated to the point where every single aspect of one game would be found copy pasted in another. XY did it most shamelessly where they literally ran out of a story and just copy pasted the one from DP (albeit made much much worse). I won't say it was flawlessly executed, but at the very least SM tried to make the series fresh. Trials are a breath of fresh air compared to gyms at that point, Totems are genuinely one of the best ideas in the series since having pokemon be the actual bosses is amazing, regional forms being new life to old pokemon, Ultra Beasts are a completely different kind of pokemon entirely. Of course SWSH just went and took a shit on most of that later on, but SM at least tried.

SWSH only built off of SM.
SM was still a shameless rehash, even though they did end up lazily cutting the gyms to shove trials in the story ended up being more of the same shit but with Lillie and Cosmog being the most convenient tutorial and narrative plot device ever.

That still would have been about 700 individual entries and sprites they would have had to make pages for, which just takes up more room for other things in the game. But you still had access to every Pokémon in Sun and Moon.

If Gamefreak had any brains at all, they’d learn from removing all the Pokémon they did, and just let all Pokémon be transferable into the next games, just... without the dex entries? I know they say they won’t put Nat Dex back in, but do they really have to, with HOME now? Just let us have all 898 Pokémon in the next game.
