The only one that was blatantly obvious was Gen VI rival, Barry was the strongest outright trainer in the series at one stage and remained competitive till the end, Wally was a weakling who took a level in badass, Bianca beat the Unovan E4, Hau was the Bianca of SM, then a decent challenge rival in USM, Marnie became a Gym Leader after the League and Hop canonically caught the opposite box legend to you; and then you have the Gen VI rival who you kick around like a cheap football and who Game Freak gave a mega ring to in the post-game, as if they hadn't spent the entire game showing time and again how poorly they stacked up to the MC.

To be fair, Serena/Calem not getting the Mega Ring is pretty significant in the grand scheme of things.
Lysandre uses it as leverage for proving that resources can't always be shared and must be fought over.
Don't get me wrong, Serena/Calem are by far the most bland rivals and I don't think taking away their hat and giving them the worst hairstyles helped, but that part was pretty kino because neither of them could refute it.

What was great about Blue and Silver were the fact that you knew no matter what they were very strong trainers. Even if you beat them, you knew they were right there with you rival wise.

Wally was such a turn around that you didn't expect him to come out like he did. Even then, it was a shock and you realized his worth and hard work.

Barry will always be my favorite because you see his failures, but he tries his best and wants to get better.

The rest of them start their journey off with you. They don't dictate strength at all and the game basically after all these years tells you you're going to beat them regardless.
That's frustrating.

If Hop had a different personality, I might have seen him as something different. Same with Marnie.
I don't mind friendly rivals, but they don't seem like they are strong personality wise.

The Gen 6 rival is the only one that makes me feel genuinely bad, because they feel like they're actually trying but the shitty teams and your OP mega advantage (even if you don't use them, it feels so fucking cheap that you have the chance and they don't) mean they are literally incapable of competing.

The issue is that the protagonist is entirely mute, so any rival 'arc' just results in them losing to you then monologuing for a few minutes, with each subsequent monologue getting them closer to realising why they're so shitty at battling.
Hau and Gladion kinda worked because they had each other to play off, instead of just the player. But even then I don't think even semi-decent characters are preferable to simply NOT having constant fucking dialogue to mash A through. Even at it's 'best' Pokemon writing makes the games worse.

The games don't even feel like you're going on an adventure anymore. It feels like you're periodically given control back to take on a Gym, then it's time to get back to the next installment of your rivals shitty arc.

Serena is the only one I actually felt bad for because she cries about it so much. Maybe Hop to a certain extent because of the relationship with the champion being his brother. The others either prioritize something else, take it in stride, or turn out for the better because of it.

always thought the idea they had for the gen 6 rival fitting into the philosophy of lysandre and x/y’s attempt at deconstructing the idea of “the chosen one” was kinda neat, but it was written in a really safe and weird way. i really wish GF had the balls to emphasize more on that idea, like when lysandre chastises you in team flare’s lab if you don’t choose to use mega evolution through your playthrough, stating how you’re wasting the privilege granted to you and believing you to be selfish for still hoarding the mega ring for yourself
oh gamefreak, if only you actually tried beyond a few dialogue prompts
