See, this is the problem with modern Pokemon. Gens 7-8 aren't fantastic by any means, but when you constantly have one or two characters coming up every time you take a step forward in a game, you tend to remember them and the pointless dialogue they say more than anything.
That's largely why I can vividly remember the interactions with Hop and Sonia in SWSH or Hau and Kukui in SM but I can't even remember when you see Dawn/Lucas in DP or Bianca past Nimbasa in BW.
I do, however, fondly remember the lore and worldbuilding XY had. Lysandre on his own is a shitty villain but what made him good was that Kalos in general was filled with pretentious pricks like the Chateau people or the guy with the Furfrou. The game forces you to use your main rival like a stepping stone and Lysandre uses the needing to fight for the mega ring as leverage in his justification. Then after you beat him you have to go through Pokemon village where a bunch of Pokemon were abandoned and the postgame episode has you exploring new parts of Lumiose with orphaned children living in the slums.
But yeah no I can't remember the gym leaders or what Pokemon they had for the life of me, only that they had the whole athletics theme going and that we had to fight Korrina twice with shilldog.
