Just have a default difficulty and harder options in the options menu. Tiny kids don't use the options menu, so only older kids will notice. Have the option toggleable at any time as well, so you can make it harder if you feel like it, or turn it back down.

Better than a slider would be two fixed difficulty levels: One based on the Let's Go mechanics, one based on the traditional mechanics. The Let's Go mode could be containment for all of the Carebear bullshit that has been ruining these fucking games.

In Salon del Manga 2013, an otaku themed expo in Barcelona during the XY launch window, Masuda was invited and did a Q&A session. He was asked if there were more adults or kids playing Pokémon games and he said he believed it was split half and half, and that at GameFreak they though thtis was great thing because the more expert players could teach things to the younger generations.
So they do recognize the adult fanbase as at least as equally important as kids.

Most people want stuff to do in the single player game and go online for random matches for fun or just play their friends. The other series have created experiences that give new players a chance to get into it without treating older fans like drivelling idiots the whole way. Only pokemon seems to think you need a map that not only shows you your next destination but will scream at you every 10 minutes if you aren't there yet, or locks progression points behind a fetch-quest designed to tell you the answer instead of guiding players to it and letting them at least think they figured it out themselves, or removes player interaction in favor of more cutscenes.

I play Fortnite all the time, that game is unforgiving as fuck. It made modes like Team Rumble for children but its not like that always existed. Season 4 was full of people dropping to Tilted and getting wiped out.
