I never completed a PokéDex. Yes, I'm ashamed, but I want to change that. Which game should I focus on? I also want to have fun and explore a large region.

If you're going for a national pokedex it's best to start with XY and ORAS. Almost every Gen 1-6 pokemon is available between the two.

This. Gen VI is one of 3 generations where you can get the in-game Diploma (every Pokemon except so-called Mythicals, which are Pokemon you only get from events, without having to transfer Pokemon over from older gens. I and III are the other two, but you need a shitload of gen III games for that.

As others have said, Gen 6 games are enough to complete it, especially considering their online features are still somewhat active, so you can get some version exclusives easier.
