Pikachu got a new evolution in gen VII (Electric/Psychic), as did many others in that gen and subsequently (e.g. Mime Jr. got a new Ice/Psychic evo)

Because of the initial negative reaction to many of the ones in your pic I'd wager. A damn shame too, only Rhyperior, Magmortar, Lickilicky and Ambipom are actively worse than the previous evos.

they made way too many evos AND prevos in one gen, then decided to lock more than half of them behind the postgame, not to mention the fact that some here definitely didnt need evos at all. that said i still love the likes of Magmortar and Rhyperior

Anon, I- you know what? I think this might be the answer. Megas, regional variants, and gigantamax let Pokemon receive "new evolutions" without ruining the "sanctity" of the original evolutionary line/family. Kids and autists like seeing their little buddies get new shit as long as it doesn't ruin them in any way.

What's the point then....

And don't tell me they don't want to retcon things. Yanmega / Ambipom / etc gave them a way to add an evo with only a moveset addition. AND they finally gave in and made Leafeon / Glaceon stone evos.

At that point, might as well still view it as Gen 5 got no new mon support afterwards. Even Mega Audino is a weird afterthough.

GF does not know how to take criticism. People were okay with the concept of new evos for oldmons, they were complaining that they designed SHIT evos.

Hell, Magmortar and Rhyperior are terrible, like literary someone should get fired for that.

The new regional forms are nice, Purrserker is wonderful.

Because a lot of the cross-gen evolutions received massive backlash during gen IV.
I hope the initial backlash to Obstagoon won't stop them from again returning to cross-gen evolutions, even if they are just regional.

So they have to go to the extreme opposite? I think the problem was that there were TOO many evos/preevos introduced in a single gen. They could have kept introducing maybe 3 or 4 new stages for older pokemon and everything would be fine.
