EVs would be fine if the game actually told you about it. Hidden mechanics that affect the player either negatively or positively based on a non-obvious factor is bad game design.

They're fine as a way of making each pokemon unique, and for 99% of players, they'll never notice.

But yes, from a competitive standpoint, it is mind numbing. It's really annoying spending 3 hours breeding the perfect Garchomp, then spending another 30 minutes to an hour grinding his EV's.

But then again, competitive Pokemon is annoying in and of itself, so it's kind of fitting. 99% of players won't care, as they just want to beat the elite four, battle some of their friends, then move on after 30 hours of play time.

I cannot be bothered to care about IV's. The last Pokemon I trained was a Timid Lanturn with a 252/252/4 spread. It doesn't matter to me if it's lacking those additional 31 points in each stat.

What if mons worked like other RPGs? Each time you catch a Pokemon you assign which stats it's proficient in from the start, but you can never give it 31 perfect in everything. Instead of EVs being applied automatically based on the stuff they fight, you just get a few EV points to assign every time they level up.

There should also be hold items that force EVs into a certain stat, and a cheap battle item to double them a la Macho Brace.
Grind mitigated, hidden mechanics retained for players who really want to get deep into it.

Well in RPGs where you only play as one character you usually choose what you're proficient in from the start. And as you level up you decide which stats to focus on. I meant if the game was more like that.

Dude you can literally have a fully EV trained Pokemon in less than 2 minutes, less than 1 if you have the cheap Vitamins unlocked in IoA. There is no grinding for EVs anymore. IVs on the other hand is incredibly easy with 5 star raids guaranteeing 5IV Pokemon for Parents. Breeding is the actual grind but thats another matter. EVs are easy

I think the entire stat system is seriously overdue for an enormous overhaul though.
