Who the fuck are the Masked Heroes in XY? They are confirmed not Sina and Dexio and Shauna is right here with them in this image, so it can't be her either. Was this foreshadowing a plotline for Z which was dropped?

Do people think Z would have been good? I do, it's a shame about Kalos, but I think they would have been the worst third versions.

Probably this. XY was setting up a lot of things that got unanswered and sort of got answers in Alola.
Would make sense if Kukui and Burnett were just unspokenly them the whole time like Looker was a faller in ORAS.

Gen 6 had a lot of foreshadowing for Alola before they butchered Gen 7 and got rid of gyms.
Based on their hairstyles, i'm inclined to believe they are Ryuki and Kahili, because they have no relevance in base SM and are implied to come from another region, similar to how Zygarde also came from Kalos to Alola for no reason.

This actually makes a lot of sense! While they're in their alter ego forms they change color palettes.
The female defender of Kalos has a red and purple theme while the male one is blue and white, this is mirrored in their everyday outfits.
Shame we never battled them so we can't confirm if they're also flying and dragon specialists, but given that those two types were prevalent in Kalos because of the lore and Sky Battles, it makes sense.

According to interviews, gyms were removed as late in the debugging phase-- so late that they couldn't make unique visual assets for the trials.
Anyway, we know from XY that Sun and Moon were supposed to already have an established League anyway. The tourist mentions how the champion in Alola was something else, along with an amazing battle facility which turned out to be the Royale Dome.

They probably reserved the zigarde and magearna stuff for the kalos third game but due to sm being rushed for the anniversary they had to scrap all that and put it into sun and moon even if it didn't make sense whatsoever
