Humanoid Pokémon existed in Gen I. In fact, there were a good number of them. But they were always Fighting or Psychic, and there was always a weirdness to them, like you don't look at Machamp or Mr. Mime and say "This feels very sincere".
When they began extending human tendencies to other types, it felt weird. Like it was no longer just these weird guys in the corner, suddenly the starters were a ninja, a samurai, a heel wrestler, an archer, a soccer player, a drummer, etc. When you think about Fighting and Psychic types, the former is about physically training and the latter is about mysterious awakened potential. They're opposites, brain vs brawn.
But having all these other things just doesn't feel like it would fit the original Pokémon's worldview.
