Right now I'm playing Rising Ruby and doing an X Soullink with a friend. I just kind if play whichever one I feel like, but I know most people prefer to play play one at a time. I'd say start your S/M playthrough and if it gets too overwhelming just pause, finish HG/SS, and come back once you're done.

It's decent, but don't get too excited. Some of the mons are really cool though.
