I remember taking this screencap many years ago. Even his sprites have wildly different shades of purple from generation to generation (compare his RSE sprite to his FRLG, DP, HGSS, and BW sprites). Gengar's color has never really been consistent beyond "purple". And even then, he was black in some early art.

I think this season has just been pushing to give him things that a lot of people have felt like he deserved for a long time now. He started off using his Mr. Mime, he finally got a Lucario after years of foreshadowing that only lead to blueballs, he got the evolved form of one of the most controversial releases from the original show (Haunter), he got a reliable pseudo-legendary, and he got a fossilmon. The only outlier is Farfetch'd. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point during this series he got one of his released Pokemon back like Primeape.

I'm still convinced that internal documents list Primeape among the "Ash can call for this Pokemon back if he needs it" Pokemon, like Squirtle. I can't imagine why else it would randomly be included in group shots of all of his Pokemon in two different OPs.

Non-shiny differing colour Pokemon in the anime aren't all that uncommon. They were pretty common back in the day and the Stadium games used to do it for 'Mon you nicknamed.
His Meltan was slightly different coloured too, though I'm not sure if it retained the difference when it evolved into Melmetal.

I think that was similar to how in a lot of episodes, where there are a bunch of the same Pokemon, the most important one will get hurt in the first act so you can tell it apart by the band-aid. Ash's Meltan was weird-colored so you could identify the damn thing among the other Meltans.
