Seeing as we're close to the two year anniversary, what were your initial thoughts on Sword and Shield based on the reveal?

I was ultimately really disappointed with Sword and Shield, but back when this first trailer was revealed I was cautiously optimistic based on the pretty substantial looking cities and just not having a ton to go off of.

Thought it looked cool. Disapointed that Pokemon weren't on the overworld until the Wild Area trailer. I thought the Stadium arena looked sick but the Football aesthetic was mad gay. Sobble looked like shit and I still think it's really unappealing

On reveal I was really mad we were going back to the normal style of encounters instead of overworld ones as well as annoyed there were no following Pokemon, I also thought the game was really ugly. When the revealed the Wild Area I was back on board but then immediately after they announced the dex cut and I said "fuck this game" and never looked back.

Still haven't bought.

Pretty much this. I hate the dex cut as much as the next guy but all of the excuses and cope prior to dexit was fucking disgusting. I've pretty much dumped the main games altogether.

The game looked underwhelming in the graphics department, the starters all sucked, scorbunny sucking a bit less, but overall the new areas looked really nice and explorative from what the trailer showed
The second trailer rolled and after seeing corviknight allong with the wild area i was excited for what the game had to offer, dynamx was pretty cring tho, still is
then the shitstorm happened

Was already disappointed during the first trailer as it looked like an upres 3ds game then was a bit optimistic with the wild area part of the 2nd trailer then my optimism immediately collapsed harder than a dying star the very moment Dynamax was shown which I was like “aww great another fucking worthless gimmick” (and once I knew what it did, I knew for a fact it would be a broken gimmick where it is almost impossible to win online without using it outside of extremely specific circumstances) said optimism collapsed further after the Gigantimax trailer, team yell and Rose and dexit (not for the dexit itself but rather the excuses gamefreak used to justify it only for all of it to be a fat lie and the dlc to add some mons back in which further destroyed their justification) as at that point I knew it’s just gonna be a shitty rip off of gen 7s plot and somehow its even worse than my expectations as SWSH ended up being an amalgamation of the worst parts of XY and SM put together and made 10 times worse.

They aren't offensively bad but I didn't like them.
I hate cartoon monkeys for whatever reason, so I wasn't thrilled about an avocado monkey with gloves.
Scorbunny is just a very bland bunny.
Sobble's massive head and stick limbs made it uglier than it would have been otherwise.

The only other generation I disliked them this much was Unova, but at least snivy looked funny.

I thought it looked shit for next gen Pokemon, and played Digimon Cyber Sleuth instead.
It turned out to be far better then Pokemon in every way except level design.

Did you actually play back when RBY came out? Charizard has never actually been good. The only reason you think that is because people used it. Just because people use a shit pokemon doesn't make it good, Blastoise was better in every sense just by being mono-type. The word you're looking for is 'popular' and the only reason it was popular was because of the TCG and stupid retarded kids saw the number 120 and 100 and assumed it was the best. Charizard has never been good, ever.

My greatest disappointments are that Bea, Melony and Klara don't appear on both games and some starters, fossils and mythicals can't be transferred. I wanted Hop to be a Shauna clone not a Hau clone.

I was cautiously optimistic. I thought the backgrounds looked nice and the city designs interesting. I was looking forward to exploring what looked like massive cities and secret ruins in the hills.

After having played the game, disappointed. It was way too simple and linear. It'll be my last game until there's a huge improvement in both story and game design.

I was disappointed by the lack of following Pokemon.
I was tempted to get Lets Go just for that, but ultimately got put off by the low number of Pokemon.
So when the dex cut was revealed, I felt even less of a desire to get it.
The DLC actually made me reconsider, what with the large number of added pokemon and following Pokemon.
But having to pay 90 bucks and the following pokemon being botched put me off again.

I was excited. The towns looked like they had effort put into them, some of the teased areas looked great like the cave, I was hopeful the sports gimmick wouldn't just be gym battles with some extra flair. I liked the starts too and the pre-rendered reveal cutscene made me hopeful some effort was going into cutscenes. But a lot of my hope was crushed when they revealed the Galar map and we saw how small the region was.

I've heard it's surprisingly better, but I'm not buying what is essentially a 90 buck game merely to enjoy a fraction.
I'll just wait and hope the DP remakes are around the same quality as the DLC.

When swsh was announced I didn't care because I didn't own a switch or a 3ds and the most recent game I owned was black 2 so I told myself I wouldn't keep up with the game until I played the 3ds ones, 3 months after reveal in like may I discovered Nintendo's online store and bought a used 2ds xl for $100 and then went to Amazon and bought alpha sapphire then to Walmart and bought ultra moon and super Mario 3d land, 3d land and alpha sapphire were fun but i didn't find ultra moon fun to play so I only played it on my way to work
I bought y version in July of that year but didn't beat it until July of 2020
In August I bought my first Nintendo switch used off Amazon for $250 so I could play let's go eevee and maybe swsh a game I knew nothing about because I purposefully ignored all the talk about it (including an extended period of time away from /VP/)
In November I finally decided to look into everything revealed because I heard everything leaked and decided to get an Xbox one s but I was still undecided if I would get the game
The day before the game released I looked up streams on YouTube of pokemon shield because I was deciding whether to get it or Naruto ultimate ninja storm 4 and met a dude that I'm now good friends with that convinced me to buy the game

All in all the best part of swsh was getting that friend because there's so much shit that he's gotten me into that I wouldn't normally have thought I was into

The DLC is pretty high quality -in a sense- but it's still pretty small.
The Tundra specially is a nice prototype of what a whole region as one continuous map should be like, but it still has just one town and very few landmarks. The legendary hunt was also fun but it was very deliberately built for this DLC and can't really be transplanted as-is (although the regi and bird parts were pretty much like shit you could find in Sinnoh)
I got the game and DLC code second-hand for 20€ each. It's less than half the official retail price but I'm not sure if it's still worth it. On the plus side, GF didn't get one cent from me.

Trust me the way they implemented following pokemon in the DLC was atrocious like a most Pokémon can’t catch up and will just teleport to you and on top of that, they don’t even have small dialogs like in HGSS when talking to the mon and seeing their mood. Hell let’s Go actually did follow mons far better that SWSH ever did as it also had the perk or actually riding some Pokémon.

Though I do think SOME of that is present in the final game. It's just under developed and ultimately underwhelming. The towns feel like they're better designed but they're hollow and empty and still built with that forward camera in mind, the cave is probably one of the better areas in the game and on paper most of the areas have good concepts to them but the maps are shit, the gyms have some great refreshing challenges like Kabu's challenge, or the more advanced minigames like the bumpercar ride and herding but they're mixed in with some really bland ones or outright unfinished ones, and there are at least a few pre-rendered cutscenes.

Since ORAS they just don't give a fuck about anything anymore. SM tried to have an unique story and offer a different kidn of experience but absolutely neglected anything else. The next three entries have been nothing but efortless cashgrabs.

Honestly, if you try to map them to a 2D layout, the towns are very typical pokémon towns. They just can't and don't live up to the huge cardboard cutouts that decorate them.
The pinball and the herding were nothing to write home about, just some very easy "puzzles" to look flashy in trailers. Heck, most of what looks nice about SS was pretty for the sake of trailers.
Then you reach Raihan and the challenge is... three battles. That's it.

Honestly I was so burnt out by the lack of polish or care from previous games that my interest and faith dropped to zero once they revealed they had no plans of being novel and would instead focus on the same shit they had always done. It read like they would make the kind of game that SM was but without its story and replacing the trial challenge with bog-standard gyms, and it was.

Said pessimism got worse the more info came out. After playing it, my outlook on the main series games for the future is pretty grim. Currently replaying Crystal, and having way more fun then I did with Shield and the DLC.

I remember the first trailer looking nice, but "more of the same". It wasn't until the second trailer that I got mildly hyped. That first look into the wild area felt like they were finally taking another step forward. The idea sounded very promising and I was excited to find out what other kinds of gameplay they could have in there.
Of course then it turned out that was literally all there was to it and that it was just empty as fuck and underdeveloped like everything they do.

SwSh do become better games with the DLCs, but the fact that you have to pay a lot of extra money to access that content is a shame and unacceptable. A lot of what I don't like from SwSh is from it's most glaring flaws which I won't get into detail, but they largely stem from how it was rushed. I don't know Masuda and co. personally so I can't say if I believe the game's flaws can also stem from laziness/greed but who knows. I will judge them next gen.

Wrong, it was developed on Let's Go's engine. Although, I can't say for sure if the GF code part of Let's Go isn't at least partially some sort of 3DS era engine, apparently there's strings for Alpha_NX and Omega_NX in Home. But the Gen 6 engine isn't the same as the Gen 7 engine, despite most appearances, so what the fuck do I know. Regardless, I would also describe my first opinion of SS to be "HD Sun and Moon", regardless of what engine it's on.

I'm hesitant to say either, although if you consider "we have to get this game out because every other part of the franchise is geared up for new product" to be greed, then yes absolutely it's greed. That having been said, I don't think they're necessarily doing it for the money, but out of a sense of responsibility. It's still fucking stupid though, video games can't come out at the rate they need to to keep up with the toy shilling marketing scheme, you have to make a new line every three or so years, and even then you have to rename the toyline every year.
