It's very hard to lose a market like that, kids don't care about the quality that much, and parents don't know the difference anyway.
I'm not sure sales numbers are entirely an accurate measure of people liking a game anyway desu. On handhelds it was different because Pokemon was practically the flagship series of those consoles, people would buy a DS JUST for Pokemon games.
The Switch on the other hand, people already owned for Smash, Mario Kart, Zelda, etc. Pokemon now just feels like something people pick up because they already have the Switch, rather than a reason to BUY a Switch.
I'm not sure what it means (or if it means anything at all) for the franchise in the future
