quite possibly the best option they took on the design. the mix of 3d body and 2d smoke creates a nice cartoon/anime effect, which is perfect for pokemon.
only zoomers would dislike it.

Torkoal is too based to fuck up, but I liked the way they handled it. Would be cool if it could blow smoke out of its nose when it attacked though

Yes, but no, but also yes. The mask updates its shape at a much slower framerate than the scrolling smoke texture and the mon's animation, which makes it look so stupid. The fact that it's blocky doesn't help either, as much "future-proofing" Game Freak did only matching the mask resolution to the 3DS resolution. Good concept, good thinking, not-so-stellar execution.

It was better on the Gamecube. Translating Torkoal's smoke as a part of its model looks really bad. Before, it would only blow out smoke from its body when attacking or fainting. It also looked more like actual smoke, and not a fuzzy, 2D graphic.
