Anyone else just always disappointed by Pokémon not just by the nu-gen?.
It's not even nostalgia I was even disappointed as a kid wishing it could be like the manga instead of the boring lackluster games we got.

Better and many quality of life improvements, but that just wasn't it.
During the 2-3 gap I found games that did play out like the manga like Arc the Lad, and FF9 ; thus I decided to abandon the series altogether after being disappointed so many times.

for example this came out the same year as r/g in japan

but it was light years better than what pokemon is,
it didn't get the hype in the USA because it came out in 02' here.
I tried again with mystery dungeon, it was alright. But it just didn't stack up to what else was out there.

I always loved the designs, but I just always hated the execution of the series.

No, the games were my definition of Pokémon. I never thought "I want these to feel more like the anime or Special". In fact, the one manga I wanted to actually seek out was Zensho which seemed to try adapt the games closer to what actually happens.

Even looking at your picture of Special makes me cringe. Like that wasn't the world I fell in love with, that wasn't the world Game Freak envisioned and created. Same with the anime. Ash and Pikachu are not my image of what Pokémon is or should be.

Yes, this picture has Pikachu and Charizard, but they don't feel like mascots. They feel like some of the monsters you'll be encountering, and the real draw is the competitive glare between the protagonist and rival.

i want an action RPG too. Rumble was a neat beat-em up until it got repetitive and relied on replacing with stronger mons. I enjoyed the mystery dungeons, but saving evolutions for post-game and leaving your recruits out of story missions only shortened gameplay. Pokken was also cool, but needs more mons

I just never liked the "animal" aspect, the way they were portrayed in snap or how everyone nowadays wants them to be.

The special and even electric tale; seem to portray them as mysterious beings that bonded with very few people.

More akin to yokai or cryptids.
Even in the anime's first couple of episodes seeing a pokemon was a huge deal.

There were very few Pokémon about, and we rarely saw repeats, and even so there honestly almost no trainers about aside from the dex holders and rocket grunts.

No Trainer in the game uses one so you can't find its location through the Pokédex. It has a 1% encounter rate in an optional area that you can't full explore until you have several field moves, so it's not even Pikachu rare where it has a 5% encounter rate in a required area so a decent number of kids will encounter one. Dunsparce isn't particularly powerful, but it's incredibly rare which is befitting of something that is akin to Bigfoot. Having one as a kid would be pretty special, and you'd likely be the only person you knew who had one.

I don't think of Pokémon as having inherent value in their mere existence. Like Articuno is not special because it's Articuno. Articuno is special because there's only one, it's in an optional area, it's difficult to catch, it's a pretty high level for a wild Pokémon at that point in the game, and it requires some puzzle solving to reach it. Articuno is the experience, not the Pokémon itself. It's the same way Arceus is the experience of ascending Mt. Coronet again post-game, playing the Azure Flute, appearing within the Hall of Origin, and ascending a massive staircase for a battle with a literal level 80 god. Even its battle theme is enormous.

Then there's just handing out Arceus as a distribution, no effort, no experiences, nothing. That isn't Arceus to me, that's an extremely generic experience that can be applied to literally anything.

Not interms of being rare or unseen animals. They were like a rare occurrence in themselves

We didn't even know what the fuck a pokemon was or what made something a pokemon?

The as the games progressed the more we knew about pokemon, and the more animalistic they became. The mystique was gone.

Pokémon always acted as a substitute to animals in the games. Animals may have existed separately (even if just as text references), but I never got the impression that all Pokémon were supposed to be rare. Trained Pokémon are supposed to be stronger than wild Pokémon, and there is significant gameplay evidence of that with stat experience/EVs, reaching higher levels than what's found in the wild, reaching higher stages of evolution than what's found in the wild, and having control over learning moves rather than it exclusively being the four most recent moves. So in that sense, a Pidgeot in Gen I is so much more than a Pidgey, even if it started as a Pidgey. It's evidence of personal effort getting you a Pokémon that someone who won't put in the effort won't get.

The important part is the distinction of common Pokémon from rare Pokémon. This idea is present as early as Satoshi Tajiri's Capsule Monsters pitch to Nintendo.

I think that if you can conceptualize what Pokémon as a game is meant to be and fully understand that, you can treat it as a distinct entity from the various other media like spin-offs, manga, anime, etc. Usually when I see complaints, it's that the media has drifted from the source material, so you just have put the games as the central worldview, even if it's not your favorite worldview.

People were shocked and surprised to see a pokemon constantly.

Oak sent Red off with the dex because we hardly knew anything about pokemon.

The games were odd, sometimes they were treated as a new phenmon that we hardly knew about, and other times like they implemented into daily life. I never really got how day to day life was conducted in said world it was all rather confusing truth be told.
