The problem with the pokemon anime is that it was made to be a new doraemon but at the same time wanted the benefits of an ongoing narrative which is what turned it into the worst product of the entertainment industry.
The new movies are actually standalone adventures with a guiding lead with no baggage which is exactly how the format they want actually does work.

If you want to see an actual animated developing story with a character having a team you shouldn't have supported the main anime in the frist place. That's not an option now.
