You may not realize this, but games that came out before Alola actually had more to do in the overworld and railroad you through a straight line with nothing but trainers stopping you as a time waster.
That's how it's always been.

How? Most of what you would be doing in the overworld in gens 1-6 would be fighting trainers, collecting overworld items, and catching wild pokemon. How is that any different than Alola's overworld?

Those are the only three things you'd being doing on this route other than a move tutor but alola also has move tutors so I still don't see how this is any different than Alola

nah, my point is that i agree with you, routes in pokemon always mostly consisted of the same gameplay loop and there wasn't much else to do there

My apologies then. I wasn't trying to argue that routes consisting of battling, catching pokemon, and collecting items was bad, but I think it's stupid that the other anon thinks Alola routes have only battling trainers as the main thing to waste time when really they consist of the same kind of content that all the games that came before it did. If there's any one criticism that nu-pokemon gets that isn't true or at least exaggerated, it' the "hallway/straight line route" meme
