As long as there are version differences, then it's only logical to assume that one would be better than the other. However, I don't think there's an objectively superior version, because it depends on which pokemon you prefer, which is subjective.

Immersion-wise not. Guzma has more Dark than Bug in the Battle Tree, despite being the Bug expert, while Plumeria only has 5 different Pokemon but 4 are Poison.
Dexio is the Psychic expert, but has as many Fairy as he has Psychic, while Ice is still Sina's most common type.
Mallow and Kiawe both have 4 of their type specialty, but Kiawe only has 5 Pokemon in total, while Mallow has more.

LeafGreen is better than Firered because it's the only way to get a Slowpoke in gen 3. Every FireRed exclusive is available by an alternative means.

HeartGold is better than SoulSilver because you don't have to deal with Whirl Islands shit
Black and White is personal preference whether you want Black city or White Forrest
Sword is better because Zacian is broken

Depends of the version exclusives each game has. For example the Victreebel and Vileplume lines are both solid on their on way, so what one you pick doesn't really matter.
Then there're cases like Gligar and Delibird, where the first completely outclasses the second even without an evo, or Seedot and Lotad, where the last can learn damaging moves far earlier.
But third versions are usually better anyways. So why even bother?

third versions are usually better, but for gens 1 and 2 I actually prefer blue and gold versions for various reasons. mainly for the sprites and exclusives but there are some additional things I think gold offers over crystal in particular
