Setting aside whether Pokémon needs intricate lore or not, what would be the best possible plot for a mainline game GF could feasibly pull off?
Remember that it still needs to be marketable and not scare kids away. Just wondered that myself after thinking about the lackluster stories of fangames and the mainline series.
Bonus points if it has a good plot twist.

They already did it with Gen 5 and Gen 6, and even Gen 7 had some shock value despite everything being extremely underdeveloped and hamfisted.
I really think XY nailed it on the head, that's why GameFreak can't seem to let those threads go. The concept of Pokemon bioenergy and worldwide conflict taking place in the ancient past and manipulating extraterrestrial beings to cut across space and time in alternate universes is just too good of a thing to pass up.

I think Pokémon has the necessary ingredients for an epic plot that's consumable enough for children, hell, we even had a life and death legendary duo, but I always think there were a number of missed chances that could be fixed by minor changes, especially in XY or SM. Hell, even SworShie would be salvageable if the energy crisis could happen any minute now instead of it being a millennium away.

Focus on exploration and give players long sections of isolation, or at least quiet. It's an adventure.

Game Freak lead the player on a tight least with how they handle their stories, it doesn't need to be a focus

Your dad is the professor, who tasks you with going around to investigate this phenomena and collect data on these rampaging Pokémon.

Assisting the different towns and helping the residents to find their lost Pokémon will unlock the gyms and allow you to proceed. Some Pokémon you find in the wild will be stronger and have uncommon traits because of the evil team shenanigans, but catching them will allow you to harness those traits and breed even more unique Pokémon.

i also shill kalos alot but to shill it because of lore and story is not a hill i wanna die on the az plot is handeled poorly and everything in the overall plot is underdeveloped as hell only good plot is emmas quest in the postgame

This. Worldbuilding > Plot. I'd rather uncover ruins of an ancient civilization and figuring out what led to its demise than being loredumped about it. I want more subtlety and nuanced foreshadowing instead of blatant spoilers. I think a plot in the sense of driving the game forwards is necessary, but the player should be able to fill the gaps within the lore (which shouldn't be the main focus of the game) through exploration and headcanons. This would be also good for the community at large as it facilitates discussions about the worldbuilding of that hypothetical game.
