It does have some unskippable cutscenes, but it was nice because they were treated like a reward you got after exploring.
There's never an instance in Gen 6 or below where you walk forward, get into a cutscene, and then arbitrarily have to walk forward again just to get into another one.

It was a problem since Gen4, maybe even 3. And it got progressively worse. At least Gen5 has still tons of content to make up for it. The later ones don't.

XY and BW had it right. The dancing men were stupid but at least the player is the one who fixes the blackout in Lumiose, meaning the progress of the journey was still at the player's agency.
