Reminder that Pokemon wasn't supposed to be a children game but GF was forced to tone it down because of Nintendo logo is on it.
it's also why the extremely violent pokemon manga is the closest to Tajiri's vision of pokemon.
also explains why most of Gen1 pokemon looked angry and dangerous, in contrast to the more "cute and friendly" designs since Gen3+

Tajiri said that pokemon have homes inside their pokeballs but they never showed it in any media.
it was always shown that the pokemon get shrinked inside the pokeballs

The other reason is that they sucked. Barunda was cut because Jigglypuff was the better balloon design.

Tyrannitar and Stantler were are the only cut Gen 1 Pokemon in final Gen 2 tho.

Stuff like Mikoon and Kotora were all removed before the game was finalized.

Yes, they had their designs replaced, including Ivysaurs, because they didn't fit the final game's aesthetic.
They might stand out on their own (as Capsule Monsters), but when you compare them to the ethos of the final vision of Gen 1 they suck.

Kotora isn't even that good. It had to be completely revamped as Spheal.

Except Nintendo did fuck-all for them on Pokémon bar agree to publish it as part of a contracted deal they'd signed with Nintendo to port games for them, they ran to Creatures for money to finish Red/Green (who I don't even think had given shares to Nintnedo by that stage) and even now, the devs recollections of the games was very much 10-12 Game Freak staff in a rented flat, making a video game, no overlords, scary suits or otherwise shadowy corporate entity.
Shit, Nintendo only sent Iwata in to help after they'd missed two deadlines for the newly-named Gold/Silver games and since then, even during the fuck-up with the wi-fi have remained hands-off on the games. Why buy a dog and bark yourself? Why contract an independent studio to make a game in a franchise they helped create for you, then waste your own employees' time/experience/wage on making sure it gets made?

non of the cut pokemon from gen 1 made it to gen 2. you could maybe argue Gyaon was reworked into Tyranitar but that's as far as it gets
