Pokemon peaked with pic related and it's just been a downward spiral ever since. Guardian signs is fun too but still not as good.

ye guardian signs is good but the story didnt have as good of a climax and I didnt like the battle mechanics changes as much. the ride summoning and soaring in the sky predates ORAS (worse) implementation. still a good game though desu

The gamefreak titles are shackled to a very rigid campaign formula that strangles any kind of storytelling they could do.
Spin-offs don't have this restriction so they have a much easier time building something interesting.

It's not like Gamefreak never have good characters though. There are a handful that are quite likeable.
They just have a tendancy to force a select few down your throat over and over again with endless mind-numbing text dumps, desperately trying to make you like them.

There isn't much you can do with the "beat 8 gyms then beat the elite four" that every single Pokemon games story boils down to.
The closest they ever got to diverging from this formula is the climax of B/W but really all they did was just replace the usual champion battle with an extended story segment, if they want to tell a good story they need to leave their shitty formula behind (they wont).
Characters don't mean shit when you story is made from the recycling bin, why don't they just scrap the gyms and league bullshit completely and focus the entire game on the villains? it would turn out much better than what we have now.

it gets really intense later, I bought a 50 cent screen protector for the bottom screen, especially for the boss-rush postgame stuff
