People always talk about him as an example of a mean rival, but as I replay fire red, he doesn't really seem like that terrible a dude. Half the time he encourages you to fill out your pokedex and continue your quest.

Honestly Blue's more a competitive kid than anything else.

Genwunners only go by the anime, which is Gary, and they only associate Blue with that, as some anons said. I mean why else do most parodies have him as Gary?

I've never seen him as an asshole, he just trash talks you and wants to win. Anyone who grew up with siblings probably experienced the exact same. He only seems like a mean rival because of the contrast between his natural competitiveness and the modern rivals sucking your dick with the force of a black hole.

He's not as much mean as he is cocky, which is what makes it satisfying to beat his ass. He always thinks he'll win, but when he doesn't, he makes an excuse for why he doesn't. That works up until you beat him as champion.
