At the end of the day, Xerneas and Yveltal both deal in the manipulation of life energy. One gives it, one takes it away. Both were utilized by AZ's weapon in their respective game's past. Presumably the weapon can disrupt and alter the general flow of life energy manipulation--Powered by Xerneas, you can force it to take back life energy and vice versa with Yveltal.
The narrative pieces are all there, unlike with SWSH where there is no logical reason for Rose to be so alarmist about an energy crisis 1000 years into the future. The fucking anime adaptation had to give him some pathos to make it work, but that's the anime and not the games where this shit should have been.
