While all 3 are good, they aren't good together on the same pokemon. There is no reason to use Dive when you have Waterfall, and a special attacker would want Surf. The player's choices being taken away is never a good thing.

It’s more or the issue of being forced to give up personalizing your tailor made team by the sheer necessity of HMs, you’d dedicate one member to everything water related, another to cutting down trees, another to pushing boulders and smashing rocks, and maybe another for flying you around if you like backtracking
That’s at least 2 members you need to forfeit some creativity to let you advance, it’s a small issue but damn if it isn’t an annoying one

I usually use two water types- any water type and Ludicolo is very effective

HMs need to be readded, fuck whiny people who are too mentally deficient to just catch some new pokemon and teach it an HM if they really don't want their main pokemon to learn it for some reason.

yeah. looking back its probably poor game design, but I remember being disappointed how lackluster DP felt with no grand waterfall marking the end of the game.
Rock climb should have been the last hm in the game and the elite four ontop a giant mountain

This. I'm playing a ROM Hack of Emerald that basically just removed HMs and lets you use the field moves just by having the right badge and that alone completely changed how I approached team comp at the sacrifice of absolutely nothing.

Haven't played LGPE so I can't comment. Lack of HMs was by far the best part of SuMo. That game's problems comes from being a generally good, potentially great game that GF was absolutely terrified of letting it do what it did well and turned it into a game long tutorial as a result. Anyone bitching about anything HM related there is just retarded and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Obstacles can exist without HMs. It has been happening since gen 7, or gen 5 if you want to count games where HMs exist but aren't needed.

There's a move forgetter and to the best of my knowledge you never need waterfall and dive at the same time, and you're gonna want surf on them anyway, so really you're only sacrificing 1 move slot

People only bitch because of how SM handled it. Using rental Pokemon takes away the idea that you're on your own adventure making it through with your own Pokemon. It isn't my Tauros or Mudsdale I'm riding and that's a problem. LGPE handled this better by having your partner Pokemon learn the moves but that isn't a solution that can be carried over to other titles. I think the best solution is to just let Pokemon who learn those HMs have field moves. LGPE kind of does this and with such a wide variety of Pokemon learn HMs that you'd never really need to sacrifice.

But with the ability to carry your box anywhere like in LGPE and SwSh too it's pretty easy to just change out as needed. I honestly think that feature was specifically added because of the upcoming DP remakes.
