The first time I played Pearl I only used Torterra, Staravia, and Luxray plus Bibarel as an HM slave, since those were the only ones I thought were cool and they still are, and work well as a team together.
I'll probably use those same ones again, plus whatever promotional Pokemon they offer on release like the Torchic in XY and Munchlax in SM, then I'll wing it for the rest.
