Holy fuck, why did nobody tell me gen 5 was this based? Pace is great, pokemon variety is excellent, game design is enjoyable. Just got to gym 4, things are great. Where does the downside come in? Are people just salty about designs?

Caveat: I will admit that I am sick and tired of the amount of tutorials and constant conversation interruptions, but I just slam A and have text speed at max, I've only tuned in for Ghetsis/N scenes and even then I just skim to get the idea. Definitely could use some dialogue trimming though.

I actually skipped 5 back in the day because it was when I shelved pokemon - got back in to try 6, had a fine time with X (although I knew it was not the best), skipped back out with ORAS after realizing how shit things had become.

I'll admit it. Gen 4 is...a little all over the place. Platinum has great battles and requires a little forethought, but the pacing is dogshit and each town feels like it has either nothing to do or exactly one thing to do. The gold/silver remakes were...fine. they weren't the worst, but the game really fucking drags sometimes. That being said, I was able to use EXACTLY the team I wanted and make it all the way through Red. But yeah, gen 4 killed my hype so hard as a kid I dropped the series, and almost killed my run again this time (almost didn't make it to victory road, then persisted and cranked it out in an afternoon)

Am I the only one who noticed how bad the AI is? It always seems like the AI flips a coin on if it uses the move that is super-effective against your pokemon. For example, at the bug gym I sent out a cottonee. Burgh had Leavanny out. 10 turns later I attrition it out. It used struggle bug ONCE that whole time. What the fuck is that?

nope. BW2 is worse. Shittier more bland story, the theme of Unova is ruined so Ampharos and Lucario can be shoved into the player's face, more annoying forced tutorials. It's like they took BW, sucked every ounce of soul and vision out of it, and just made it a generic mess.

Been a while without playing it so I don't remember if the tutorials are worse.
Point is, I don't give a shit. It adds a lot for a "3rd version", it solves the mistake that was not putting other gen's pokemon in. The story can suck it, even if it's more interesting it's just baby tier writting.

This is what I’m always saying. People love to point at Gen 5 as being the downfall of Pokémon and support their claim with its low sales, but in reality so many people burned out with Gen 4. Gen 5 didn’t sell poorly because of its own merit, it was because people had enough after Gen 4 being so lackluster.

the kids who were the prime audience for red and blue had grown into middle schoolers by the time diamond and pearl came out, and pokemon was deeply uncool to older kids at the time. younger kids who would be the new target audience were interested in other franchises, because they weren't conscious for pokemania. as a result, the franchise had all time low sales and anime viewership (at least outside japan). that's why gen 5 was a reboot and started the trend of each new gen afterward being a soft reboot too. if you remember, gen 3 was seen as a reboot at the time too. pokemon is a classic case of a franchise hitting extreme success right away and then spending the rest of its lifespan chasing that initial peak. this also explains the gen 1 pandering
