Give it an obscenely broken utility move or ability.
Something good enough that only having 5 usable Pokemon is worth it.

Ability that sets a unique terrain that buffs allies and debuffs enemies somehow. Then just run some gimmick set like Encore, Endeavor, Endure, Toxic or Grasswhistle. I like Sunkern a lot but I don't like this path for him.

New Move: Sun Turn
Exclusive move. While Sun or Grassy Terrain are active it becomes a +1 U-Turn or +2 if both are active. Takes half max HP in recoil. The large recoil makes some people prefer a berry for a 3rd send out instead of choosing an extending item.

Well it’s the only Grass shouldermon so it’s not like it isn’t unique. Although, I would have thought they’d at least make it possible to hold Budew in your arms.

Move where it plants itself in the ground and faints. The next Pokemon to come out is seeded by the dead Sunkern and gains access to the four moves it had as well as a +30 base stat increase on all stats. Bam super broken.

Maybe it'd just be access to the first move in its moveset and +1 to all the stats. Would that be too gimmicky at that point? What's the in between that would be not broken and not a gimmick?

Which Pokemon could take most advantage of a +1 boost to all stats and a fifth move that could be Giga Drain, Seed Bomb, Earth Power, Swords Dance, Sludge Bomb or Synthesis? A defensive Pokemon that wants Synthesis? A special mon that has always wanted Ground coverage?
