The routing is the best part of it, but unfortunately it's hard to convey the complexity of it. At the end of the day, all people will see is the finished product, rather than the risk analysis, timing, simulations, rng manip development, etc. behind it.
And like any other games, there's the appeal of improving your play. Might sound stupid because pokemon is a turn-based game, but the amount of time a top runner can save over a novice through sheer ability is massive. Movement, dodging spinners/optionals, menuing, quickly reacting to certain situations and immediately recognizing the optimal play, etc. And then there's rng manips, many of which are very difficult even for experience players.
But ultimately, once you've developed the optimal route and git gud, it just comes down to perseverance and luck. Doing the same thing over and over again until the game decides to give you the result you want. The only thing dumber than running it is watching it.
